With the clock as their enemy, the Bandits answered with a three play, 44 yard scoring drive that Travis Russell ended by powering in from a yard out as San Angelo cut the deficit to 34 13.
The Abilene Bombers kicked off their fifth season in Abilene with a 47 33 thumping of the expansion San Angelo Bandits in a Lone Star Football League preseason Ralph Lauren Cap
game at the Taylor County Coliseum on Saturday night.
Following a Desmond Sanders interception in the end zone, Coles hit Juan Reese for a 46 yard touchdown as the Bombers took a 13 0 lead with 7:41 left in the first quarter.
"We've been outside for a while, so to get indoors and see how we look was nice," Reese said. "I give all the credit to the offensive line because they blocked their tails off."
The Bandits finally broke through against the Bombers defense in the middle of the second quarter when McClelland hit a streaking Mike Waller for a 37 yard touchdown pass that cut the Bombers lead to 20 6 after the extra point was blocked.
"In this game, it's hard to cover the high motion," Brannen added. "Anytime you've got a defensive line that can make the quarterback uncomfortable, we are going to be all right."
That would be all the scoring in the first quarter, but the action really got going in the second.
"It's nice to come out and get a win with only one week of practice under our belts," Bombers coach Joe Brannen said. "We've got some things to clean up, but I was very proud of the first half. We need to come out and finish in the second half though."
The Bombers were able to capitalize on it by going 34 yards on 11 plays that ended with Coles running it in from a yard out for the second time in the game.
"The defense has been (forcing turnovers) a lot in practice and to see how good they are, it was a nice night," Reese said.

Lamans Casimier made sure the Bombers kept the momentum though, returning the ensuing kickoff to the San Angelo 18. After an illegal defense penalty on the Bandits, Byron Ingram hit Le'Juan Edwards from 13 yards out as he was flipping over the end boards as the Bombers took a 27 6 lead with 5:44 remaining in the half.
Left with six seconds to play, McClelland threw his second touchdown pass of the night as the half ended, this time hitting Richie Martin from 30 yards out to cut the Bombers lead to 41 20.
Christian Torres then picked off McClelland's pass on the next play and returned it to the Bandits 10 yard line. The third turnover of the night forced by the Bombers defense turned into another touchdown this one a 2 yard rush by Edwards.

job, and any time you only give up 33 points, you should win these games," Brannen said. "When you get five turnovers you should win every football game and that shows on the scoreboard."
With the Bandits threatening, the Abilene defense forced its second turnover of the night when Craig McClelland was scrambling and lost a fumble.
The Bombers responded with Edwards hauling in his second touchdown of the night from Ingram to take a 41 13 lead.
